Why bedroom air gets worse at night

You spend about eight hours a night in one room with the windows and often the door shut. Whatever is in the air stays there until morning.

A closed room

From November the windows stay shut against the cold. Nothing fresh comes in, and the room never gets a break from what you breathe, burn or bring in on your clothes.

Bedding and mattress

Pillows, blankets and mattresses hold fine dust and skin flakes. Every time you turn over, some of it rises into the air right next to your face.

Smoke and haze from outside

Smoke from the city, burning fields and forest fires finds its way through window gaps even when you think the room is sealed. Read more in our guide to smoke and haze in Nepal.

Pollen and allergies

Pollen and dust come in on hair and clothes. If you wake up with a blocked nose or a dry throat, the air in your bedroom is the first place to look.

Why clean air matters while you sleep. Fine particles (PM2.5) are small enough to travel deep into your lungs, and the WHO links them to heart and lung disease. Your lungs work all night, so a purifier that runs while you sleep gives you eight hours of cleaner air every day. Our post on clean air and a better night's rest goes deeper.

What to look for in a bedroom air purifier

1

Check the dB on the lowest speed

You will run it on low all night, so ignore the top speed. Blue Pure 411 starts at 17 dB, Blue 3610 at 23 dB and HealthProtect 7470i at 25 dB. That is a faint hum from the other side of the room.

2

Make sure the light can be dimmed

A bright indicator is the most common complaint about bedroom purifiers. All three of our picks have a way to turn the light down, listed with each model below.

3

Match the size to the room

A purifier that fits the room cleans it on a low, quiet speed. One that is too small has to run on high to keep up, as the US EPA explains. Every model below lists its room size in sq ft.

4

Leave it on all night

It cleans best when it runs the whole night with the door shut. Read how long to run an air purifier and where to put it.

Our 3 picks for a bedroom

Blue Pure 411200 m³/h · 17 to 46 dB

Pick it for a single bedroom or a kids room. Lowest speed is 17 dB, and you dim the lights by holding the button for 5 seconds. It is compact and uses very little power.

Up to 161 sq ft

Blue 3610590 m³/h · 23 to 56 dB

Pick it for a master bedroom or a big shared room. In Night mode the fan and the button light turn down, and on any speed the light dims to off after about 7 seconds. It uses only 4 to 38 W, so running it all night costs very little.

Up to 549 sq ft

HealthProtect 7470i465 m³/h · 25 to 45 dB

Pick it for a large bedroom or for someone with allergies. It has a night mode you can schedule, adjustable LED brightness and a live air quality screen. GermShield kills viruses and bacteria on the filter, even on standby.

Up to 418 sq ft

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers for buyers in Nepal.

Is it safe to leave an air purifier on all night?
Yes. Blueair purifiers are built to run 24 hours a day. The Blue 3610 uses between 4 W and 38 W, less than a ceiling fan, so the electricity cost is small. For how many hours a day to run one, see our guide to how long to run an air purifier. Work out your own bill with the electricity cost calculator.
Will the light of an air purifier keep me awake?
Not if you dim it. On the Blue Pure 411 you hold the button for 5 seconds to turn the lights down. On the Blue 3610 the button light dims to off by itself after about 7 seconds, and Night mode turns it down along with the fan. The HealthProtect 7470i lets you set the LED brightness and schedule a night mode in the app.
Should I keep the bedroom door closed while it runs?
Yes. A purifier cleans the air of the room it stands in. With the door shut it only has to clean your bedroom, so it can stay on a quiet low speed all night. Open a window in the morning to let fresh air in.
Can I put the purifier right next to my bed?
Yes. All three of our bedroom picks are quiet enough to sit beside the bed on low. Leave a little space around it so air can flow in, and turn the clean air outlet away from your face. More in our guide on where to put an air purifier.
Blue Pure 411 or Blue 3610 for my bedroom?
Choose by room size. The 411 is for rooms up to 161 sq ft and starts at 17 dB. The 3610 covers rooms up to 549 sq ft, starts at 23 dB and has Auto and Night modes. If your bedroom is bigger than 161 sq ft, go for the 3610.
