Air Purifier Maintenance in Nepal’s Dusty Season: A Simple Care Routine

Quick answer

In Nepal's dusty months, check the pre-filter every week and clean it when it turns grey, wipe the vents monthly and brush the sensor opening every 1 to 2 months. Never wash the main filter; change it when the filter light comes on.

Key points
  • Coarse road and building dust lands on the pre-filter first, so a weekly check keeps the air flowing from November to May.
  • Blueair advises cleaning DustMagnet steel pre-filters weekly; Blue Series fabric covers can be vacuumed and machine-washed on a gentle cycle.
  • Wipe the outside monthly and brush the sensor opening every 1 to 2 months, with no sprays, bleach or alcohol.
  • The main filter is never washed. Change it when the filter light comes on.

This guide covers one job: looking after your air purifier through Nepal’s dusty months, roughly November to May, when the roads are dry and building work fills the air with dust. It is about the parts you clean yourself: the pre-filter, the vents and the air quality sensor. When to change the main filter, and what each filter costs, is in our guide on how often to change Blueair filters.

A few minutes a week is enough. Do it and your purifier keeps moving the clean air it was built for, even on the dustiest days of the year.

Why the dusty months are hard on a purifier

Road and building dust is mostly coarse. It lands on the first layer it meets, which is the pre-filter. As that layer fills, less air gets through, so the room is cleaned more slowly while the fan works harder.

Keep the pre-filter clean and the main filter is saved for the fine dust and smoke it is made for. That is why the dry season is about the pre-filter first.

Clean the pre-filter every week in the dry season

In the dusty months, check the pre-filter once a week and clean it when you see a grey layer. Blueair’s general advice is every 2 to 4 weeks, and every week for the DustMagnet. If you live near a busy road or a building site, weekly is the right habit on every model.

Switch the purifier off and unplug it first. Then clean the part your model has.

Your purifier What to clean How
Blue Series (Blue Pure 411, Blue 3410, Blue 3610) The fabric pre-filter cover on the outside Vacuum it with the soft brush. Wash it in the machine on a gentle cycle as the label says, about every 6 months when you fit a new main filter. Hang it to dry fully before you put it back.
DustMagnet Series (5210i, 5240i, 5440i) The two stainless steel pre-filters Wipe them with a dust cloth or use the vacuum’s brush. Blueair says weekly, or more often if needed.
HealthProtect Series (7470i, 7740i, 7770i) The pre-filters Take them out and clean them with a dry dust cloth or the soft brush of a vacuum.
Classic Series (280i, 405, 480i, 680i) The air intake grille Brush the grille with the vacuum’s soft brush so air flows in freely.

Never put a damp part back in the purifier. Blueair says to let everything dry fully first. Its own guide to cleaning an air purifier shows each step.

Keep the vents and the sensor clear

Dust also gathers on the air intake, the air outlet and the small opening for the air quality sensor. In the dry season, wipe the outside once a month with a soft cloth that is only slightly damp, and brush the vents with the vacuum’s soft brush. Every 1 to 2 months, brush the sensor opening the same way.

The sensor matters more than it looks. In auto mode the purifier sets its fan speed from what the sensor reads, so keep the opening clear and it reads the room, not a layer of dust.

Do not spray water or cleaner onto the purifier. Blueair also warns against bleach, alcohol and aerosol sprays near the unit.

Leave the main filter alone

The main filter is never washed. Water damages the fine fibres that trap PM2.5, and a washed filter catches far less. If you want to lift loose dust off its surface, use only a low-suction brush held slightly away from it.

Dusty months fill the main filter faster, so the filter light may come on sooner than in the monsoon. Trust the light. The filter guide linked above lists the life of every filter and the signs that one is full, and our genuine Blueair filters are in stock in Nepal for every model we sell.

Habits that help in dusty weeks

  • Shut road-side windows at dusty times. Keep them closed in rush hour, on windy afternoons and while building work runs next door. Air the room when the outside air is cleaner; check the reading near you on our live AQI page.
  • Turn the fan up after sweeping or dusting. Cleaning lifts settled dust back into the air. Run the purifier on high for a while, then let auto mode take over. More on speeds and hours in how long to run an air purifier.
  • Mop, do not sweep. A damp mop picks dust up, while a broom throws it back into the air. Our air purifier for dust page explains where indoor dust in Nepal comes from.
  • Give it space. A purifier pushed against a wall or a curtain pulls in less air. See where to put an air purifier.

Dusty season care plan

Pin this to the fridge from November to May.

How often What to do
Every week Check the pre-filter and clean it if it looks grey. On a DustMagnet, wipe the steel pre-filters.
After sweeping, building work or a windy day Run on high for a while, then look at the pre-filter.
Every month Wipe the outside with a slightly damp cloth and brush the vents.
Every 1 to 2 months Brush the sensor opening.
About every 6 months Wash the Blue Series fabric pre-filter when you fit the new main filter.
When the filter light comes on Change the main filter.

When cleaning does not bring the airflow back

If the pre-filter and vents are clean and the airflow is still weak on high, the main filter is probably full. If the display stays red on an ordinary day, work through why an air purifier stays red. If the room stays dusty with a fresh filter, the purifier may be too small for it; our CADR and room size guide shows how to check.

FAQs

How often should I clean the pre-filter in the dry season?

Check it every week from about November to May and clean it when you see a grey layer. For the DustMagnet, Blueair advises cleaning the steel pre-filters weekly. Near a busy road or a building site, weekly suits every model.

Can I wipe the purifier with a wet cloth?

Use a soft cloth that is only slightly damp, with the purifier unplugged. Do not spray water or cleaners on it, and let every part dry before you switch it back on.

Does dust on the sensor affect auto mode?

Auto mode sets the fan speed from the sensor reading, so keep its opening clear. Brush it with the vacuum’s soft brush every 1 to 2 months, more often if your room faces a dusty road.

What should I do while building work goes on next door?

Close the windows on that side while the work runs, keep the purifier on auto or a higher speed, and check the pre-filter twice a week. Cement and brick dust is fine and travels far, so the filter light may come on sooner than usual.
